The Color Excerpts (Sep 26, 2016)

“I’ll see you later, Mike. Thanks again,” she said as she exited.

Great. Now it was just him and me. “So thanks again for coming.
It’s an open display, so enjoy yourself. I’ll see you around.”

He stepped right in front of me. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Not so
fast. You’re just gonna leave me here?”

“Well, like I said, it’s an open display, so you can look around
by yourself.”

“Is that how you treat your date?”

“We’re not on a date.”

“According to Alex we are.”

“You know exactly what she meant.”

“Actually, I’m a little perplexed by what she really meant. Her
actions. Her demeanor. They don’t add up.”

“What are you talking about?”

“See, gay or straight, I don’t think I know a single soul who
would let their significant other go on a date with someone who
has openly made a pass at that person’s other half…unless, of
course, that person had no idea what had occurred right under
her nose.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“She still thinks I’m gay, doesn’t she? You didn’t tell her about
last week—which makes you a liar.”

I stepped closer in Mike’s space just in case I decided to explode
on him. “First of all, you don’t know me, so don’t call me a
liar. Second of all, I didn’t tell her because it wasn’t important. I
was never supposed to see you again in my life. I just needed you to
fill the room at my show, and you didn’t even do that.”

“Actually, I overachieved on the admission cost. All the people
here are from me.”

“What?”

“Everyone here is an associate, a client, potential client,
enemy—they all owed me a favor in one way or another, so I told
them all to be here.”

“Wow. Well, thank you. But this still isn’t a date.”

“I respect your decision. With that being said, I couldn’t help
but notice that Alex and I are starting to have a blossoming friendship.
And I would hate to have our relationship built on a lie.”

“What lie?”

“That I’m gay. See, going on with this charade about Junior
and me just doesn’t feel right. The fact that after all this time
no one even told her I was straight could be looked down upon.
Depending on what type of person she is, it could look downright
suspicious that you would omit such a crucial detail about me. I
definitely would question you if you were my girl.”

The smile on this fucking asshole was drowning my patience
in a pool of bitterness. “Are you seriously blackmailing me for a
date?”

“I hate that you put it that way, but yes, that’s exactly what I’m
doing.”

“What kind of person are you?”

“It’s funny you should ask that. In a recent reflection of my life
with some good friends, I’ve come to realize that I’ve done a lot
worse for a lot less. So it would be in your best interest to at least
pretend you don’t want to kill me right now.” He threw his escort
arm out. “Shall we?”

I latched my arm onto his and pulled him close. “We do this
one thing, and that is it. After tonight, we’re even. I never want to
see or hear from you again.”

“Fair enough.”
